Diving Koh Lanta & Ao Nang: Trip Review

Diving Koh Lanta and Ao Nang – Stunning Marine Life Encounters in Southern Thailand

Scuba Diving, Things To Do
12

Scuba diving in Southern Thailand never disappoints, especially when it comes to the vibrant underwater worlds of Koh Lanta and Ao Nang. On this recent dive trip, I had the chance to explore two fantastic regions, guided by local experts — Lanta Divers on Koh Lanta and Kon-Tiki Dive Centre based in Ao Nang. From graceful blacktip reef sharks to the elusive ornate ghost pipefish, every descent delivered magic.

Diving with Lanta Divers – Koh Lanta’s Best Beneath the Surface

My adventure began on the laid-back island of Koh Lanta, where I joined Lanta Divers for a two-dive trip to the iconic sites of Koh Bida Nok and Koh Bida Nai. These limestone islets are part of the Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, known for dramatic underwater topography and abundant marine life. The package was well-priced at 3,500 THB for two dives, including all equipment (excluding the marine park fee).

Descending into the warm, clear waters, I was immediately greeted by a mesmerising shoal of batfish, slowly circling like dancers in a silent ballet. Not long after, a blacktip reef shark glided past — a heart-racing moment that never gets old, no matter how many times you’ve seen one. The highlights didn’t stop there. We also spotted barracudas, giant pufferfish, and a particularly photogenic ornate ghost pipefish camouflaged near a coral outcrop.

One of the things that made this trip even more special was the professionalism and friendliness of the team at Lanta Divers. Their briefings were clear, safety standards were high, and the entire experience felt relaxed and enjoyable — perfect for both beginners and experienced divers.

Ao Nang with Kon-Tiki Dive Centre – Macro Marvels and Hidden Gems

A few days later, I continued the journey with two more dives around Ao Nang, Krabi, with the renowned Kon-Tiki Dive Centre. Their two-dive package, including full gear rental, cost 3,300 THB, not including the park fee. This time, we ventured to Koh Mae Urai and Koh See, lesser-known sites that revealed some spectacular surprises.

While these sites may not have the big pelagic visitors of Koh Lanta, they more than make up for it with their macro life. During our first dive at Koh Mae Urai, my dive guide pointed out a tiny, beautiful seahorse gently swaying with the current. These moments of discovery are what make diving such an addictive pursuit.

At Koh See, the reef came alive with colour as we searched for nudibranchs, those psychedelic sea slugs that seem to defy nature’s colour palette. We spotted at least five species, each more vibrant than the last. If you’re into underwater photography or love spotting the small stuff, these sites are absolute treasures.

Final Thoughts – Two Regions, Two Perspectives

Diving in both Koh Lanta and Ao Nang offers contrasting experiences that complement each other perfectly. Koh Lanta impresses with its larger marine life and dramatic underwater landscapes, while Ao Nang’s sites cater to macro enthusiasts and curious explorers. Both dive centres, Lanta Divers and Kon-Tiki, provided excellent service, well-maintained equipment, and passionate guides who clearly love what they do.

Whether you’re island-hopping or just looking to add a couple of unforgettable dives to your Thailand itinerary, these two destinations should definitely be on your radar.
