Khao Lak Scuba Diving Sites

Boonsung Wreck

Boonsung Wreck Max. Depth: 30 m. The Boonsung Wreck is located right in front of the tropical beach, north of Khao Lak. The site itself is an absolute highlight for scuba divers. Once a marine mining station, Boonsung Wreck sank in 1979 and has been covered with soft corals ever since. These days it is home to an outstanding variety of marine life.

Boulder City

Boulder City is another favourite site among the Similans. Due to its exposed location, it is possible to see almost anything here, including whale sharks and manta rays. It is invariably an exceptional dive. Huge granite boulders provide a backdrop for spotting leopard sharks, Spanish dancers, and great barracudas.

Shark Fin Reef

Shark Fin Reef has beautiful coral and sponge gardens. It is an excellent site to see reef sharks and huge Napoleon wrasse. Elephant Rock, from the surface, looks like an elephant head. Below the surface there are many impressive tunnels and swim-throughs. You can find small white-tip reef sharks in a rock crevice at the beginning of the dive, as well as many colourful fish.

The Similians

The Similans are characterised by gigantic boulders above and below the waterline that create awesome underwater scenery and exciting swim-throughs for divers to explore. The water is pristine, and the visibility is exceptional. The Similans also boast exquisite sandy beaches and shallow coral reefs in the bays. This makes it an ideal location for snorkelling. Spread among the nine islands are over 20 distinct dive sites. One of the favourites, especially for photographers, is Fantasea Reef. Thousands of schooling fusiliers, bannerfish, and reef sharks make this an awesome site. Another wonderful site is Christmas Point. This is a popular spot for manta rays, nurse sharks, and barracudas. It has an impressive variety of tough and soft corals and a wonderful maze of swim-throughs.

Sea Chart Wreck

Sea Chart Wreck Maximum depth: 30 m. Once a week, Sea Bees Khao Lak offers experienced divers a new wreck dive. Using ‘Runaway’ (max. 12 divers + staff), we explore the ‘MV Sea Chart 1,’ which sank in August 2009, not far away from Thap Lamu harbour. The vessel is on its starboard side on a sandy bottom at depths of 28 to 40 meters and offers a breathtaking dive. The wreck is a little more than 80 meters long and about 12 meters wide and, although still a relatively ‘young’ ship, already hosts an abundant variety of marine life. The second dive will take place at the ‘Premchai,’ a relic from Khao Lak’s tin mining industry, which, because of the shallower depth (15-20 meters), is a comfortable and enjoyable second dive.

Koh Bon

Koh Bon The beautiful island of Koh Bon is a part of the Surin National Marine Park. Koh Bon is an amazing dive spot, famous primarily for its visiting whale sharks, manta rays, and sharks. There are thousands of schooling fish, octopuses, and cuttlefish. A myriad of corals, anemones, and fascinating sea sponges make this an exceptional dive spot teeming with life.

Richelieu Rock

Richelieu Rock is one of the best diving sites in Thailand and Asia.

The main reason for scuba divers to come to this part of Thailand still remains the world famous Richelieu Rock. Discovered by none less than Jacques Costeau it is still one of the top 10 dive sites in the world.

Richelieu Rock is a almost completely submerged rock formation that only breaks the surface during low tide. As it is the only reef far and near it it beaming with life and also is a cleaner station for the pelagic giants of the ocean.

Best time for whale sharks here is between February to April. But the diving is spectacular any time of the season.
Schools of fish, barracudas, mating cuttlefish, frogfish, sea horses, harlequin shrimp and many, many other rare critters can also be seen during every dive.
The only way to dive at Richelieu Rock is during a liveaboard safari. Since the site is so far away from everything else the boat stays there for a whole day allowing plenty of time to explore every part of it.
